International workshop: surface quality of continuously cast products

banner_enterIt was July 1997, within the program of a short course titled, School of Mould Powders for Continuous Casting, organized by ISCOR in Vanderbijl Park, South Africa, the first panel discussion on casting powders was held with participation of representatives of major manufacturers of that time.

Prof. Ken Mills, who was tutoring the School in 1997 with his brilliant lessons, is now expected to chair and introduce a new Panel Discussion on Casting Powders Technology, to be held in Bergamo within the program of IWSQ2016 organized by Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia.

Importance and uniqueness of this event are self-evident. Wide time gap between first and present panel discussion suggest that a lot of new issues deserve some considerations. Universally recognized highest academic authority in this field, Prof. Mills, and two of most experienced technical gurus of technology of casting powders accept to take the challenge of an absolute Q&A session with all IWSQ2016 attendees.

So expect the final answer to your deepest reveries of casting powders magic.

SCOPE

The surface quality of billets, blooms and slabs is a particularly important issue in order to assure the required surface quality of the final rolled products. This aspect is becoming increasingly significant especially nowadays, when a lot of steelmakers are refocusing their activity on the search for better surface quality or new specialty steels requiring high quality surface features. Moreover, the production of large size semis products and the use of the electromagnetic equipment have to be carefully performed to avoid any detrimental effects on the surface qualities.
This international meeting aims to share the knowledge about the improvement of the surface quality of the continuously cast products and this scope will be achieved by clear expositions about:
• the state of the art on the defect analysis;
• the root cause of the defects;
• presentation of innovative lubricating products;
• updated criteria for the definition of the correct casting parameters;
• application of electromagnetic devices.

A focal point of the workshop will be the Panel Discussion on Casting Powders Technology with Prof. Ken Mills (Dept. Of Materials, Imperial College) and two major experts of the field: Dirk Eckhardt (former Manager, Technical Dept., Stollberg GmbH) and Wilhelm Hubsch (former Product Fluxes Manager, Metallurgica GmbH).

 CONFERENCE VENUE

The Conference will be held at the University of Bergamo, Sala Conferenze S. Agostino – room 5, in Piazzale S. Agostino – Bergamo Alta.
