Flexible gearheads for demanding drive applications

Flexibility, power density, and cost-effectiveness are three fundamental market requirements for drive components. These aspects were also central to the development of FAULHABER’s GPT gearhead family.

The gearheads can be flexibly combined with a variety of motors from the standard range, such as the flat brushless DC motors of the BXT family or the brushless DC drives from this microdrive specialist. During the development phase, particular care was taken to ensure seamless compatibility with the DC drives of the GXR/SXR families. This has resulted in perfectly harmonised configurations—comprising encoder, drive, and gearhead—that can be compactly integrated flush with the diameter, without requiring additional coupling elements.

High torque capacity and load variation tolerance

The GPT gearhead series is engineered for exceptionally high torques. Up to six planet gears per stage enable a reduced overall length, delivering greater power within a minimal footprint. GPT planetary gearheads are manufactured from hardened stainless steel and feature continuous welded joints, ensuring the reliable transmission of high forces.

The gearheads are available in diameters from 14 to 42 mm and are significantly shorter than alternative models of the same diameter. They can withstand both constant load variations and sudden or intense load spikes. The 42 GPT series, for instance, can achieve an intermittent torque of up to 25 Nm. Depending on the version, continuous torques between 6 and 18 Nm and speeds of up to 24,000 rpm are achievable.

Thanks to a broad selection of evenly distributed reduction ratios (ranging from 3:1 up to 1437:1), these drive solutions can be optimally tailored to a wide range of applications. Performance is further enhanced by the optimised coordination of components, the use of high-performance lubricants, and an extensive choice of different shaft bearings.

High torque or low noise

The low-noise series of the GPT family was developed for applications requiring exceptionally quiet operation, such as in proximity to people or when multiple motors are used simultaneously. Thanks to an input stage with plastic gears, the 22 GPT LN and 32 GPT LN models achieve a noise level reduction of up to 10 dB compared to the standard version. Despite this, they can still transmit occasional peak torques of up to 4 Nm and 12 Nm, respectively. They operate across a wide temperature range from -30 to +110 °C, maintaining high efficiency even under frequent or sudden load variations, and stand out for both their performance and excellent price-performance ratio.

The HT models are designed for environmental conditions that demand more robust variants. Thanks to their optimised geometry, they are suited for higher loads and offer improved dynamics and maximum performance. They are available with three or four stages, across numerous reduction ratios, and for an operating temperature range between -30 and +120 °C. Sudden load variations or emergency stops do not compromise the long service life of these drives. Depending on the model, backlash ranges from 0.8° to 0.6°, enabling precise and repeatable positioning across a diverse spectrum of application fields.
